Army Tax Returns Australia

DefenceTax helps Australian Army members prepare and lodge tax returns with careful review of ADF income, allowances, work-related deductions and the records needed to support each claim.

More than a standard salary return

Tax for Army service can involve details that deserve a closer review

Army members can have a mix of salary, allowances, postings, courses, temporary duties, equipment costs and work-related travel. The tax treatment is not determined by the label on an allowance or simply because an expense arose during service.

We review the facts behind the income and expense, identify what is genuinely connected with earning assessable income, separate private costs, and check whether an amount was reimbursed. That gives each claim a clearer basis before the return is lodged.

Claim correctly, not aggressively

Common Army tax deductions and expenses we review

A deductible amount depends on your actual duties, who paid the cost, whether you were reimbursed and the evidence you hold. These are common areas we check when preparing an Army member’s return.

Uniforms & protective items

Eligible compulsory or occupation-specific uniform costs, protective items, and allowable cleaning or maintenance costs are reviewed against the current rules and your records.

Work-related travel

We distinguish deductible travel undertaken in performing employment duties from ordinary private travel between home and a regular workplace.

Tools & equipment

Personally funded equipment used for Army duties may require an immediate deduction or decline-in-value treatment, depending on the item and circumstances.

Phone & internet

Where your own phone or internet is used for work, we review the work-related portion and the method used to substantiate that percentage.

Self-education

Courses, study and professional development are assessed for their connection with your current income-earning duties rather than assumed to be deductible.

Allowances & reimbursements

We check the tax treatment of ADF allowances and reimbursements separately from the related expense. Receiving an allowance does not automatically create a deduction.

Temporary duties & postings

Travel and accommodation around temporary duties, courses or postings require a fact-specific review. We separate employment travel from relocation and private living costs.

Professional costs

Relevant subscriptions, technical publications, professional memberships and other employment-related costs are checked for deductibility and private use.

Complex tax items

Rental properties, capital gains, shares, crypto, multiple income sources, prior-year issues and overdue returns can be handled with a more detailed appointment.

Prepare once, review properly

Army tax return checklist

You do not need to know which tax label every document belongs under. Start by gathering the information that explains your income, duties and personally funded work costs.

  • Income statement and ATO pre-fill information
  • ADF allowances and reimbursement details
  • Receipts for uniforms and eligible protective items
  • Records for work-related tools and equipment
  • Phone and internet work-use calculation
  • Work-related travel diary, logbook or supporting records
  • Course, study and professional development expenses
  • Professional subscriptions and relevant publications
  • Rental property income and expenses, if applicable
  • Share, investment, crypto or capital-gains records, if applicable
  • Previous tax-agent fees and other tax-affairs costs
  • ATO letters or overdue-return information, where relevant

Expenses that need extra care

Army service can create costs that feel work-related without necessarily being deductible. We look closely at the purpose of the expense and the relevant tax rule.

  • Ordinary travel from home to your normal workplace
  • Private meals and everyday living costs
  • General fitness or personal grooming costs
  • Conventional clothing that is not deductible work clothing
  • Expenses paid or reimbursed by Defence
  • Private portions of phone, internet, vehicle or equipment use
  • Costs whose connection is with obtaining a new occupation rather than current duties

Already behind on tax?

If you have more than one outstanding return, keep the years separate and do not guess at missing figures. DefenceTax can help identify the outstanding years, organise available records and work through the returns in sequence.

Army tax questions

Questions Australian Army members commonly ask

Do Army members get special tax deductions?

Army members are subject to the tax law and ATO work-expense rules, but their duties can produce occupation-specific expenses. The important issue is whether the particular expense is deductible in your circumstances, not simply whether it is common in the Army.

Does receiving an ADF allowance mean I can claim the same amount as a deduction?

No. An allowance and a deduction are separate tax questions. You still need to have incurred a deductible expense and satisfy the applicable record-keeping rules.

Can I claim travel to and from an Army base?

Ordinary travel between home and a normal workplace is generally private. Different rules may apply to qualifying travel undertaken in performing employment duties, such as certain travel between workplaces or to an alternative workplace.

Can I claim Army uniforms, boots and protective gear?

Some compulsory or occupation-specific uniform and protective-item costs may be deductible when you pay the expense yourself and are not reimbursed. Conventional clothing and private items are treated differently.

Can DefenceTax prepare my return if I am posted outside Victoria?

Yes. DefenceTax provides Australia-wide online support, so Army members can use the service from a posting, base or home address anywhere in Australia.

What if I have rental property, shares, capital gains or several overdue returns?

Those matters can be handled as a more detailed tax engagement. Book an appointment so the additional income, deductions, records and any ATO issues can be reviewed together.

DefenceTax is independent of the Australian Taxation Office, the Australian Defence Force and the Department of Defence.
